GREENS FROM ACROSS THE U.S. CONVERGE IN D.C. TO PROTEST BUSH'S WAR PLANS

While the U.S. bribes and threatens other nations into supporting the invasion, Greens condemn Bush's anti-constitutional policy of preemptive strikes

WASHINGTON, DC -- Greens from all over the U.S. will converge on the District of Columbia for the Saturday, October 26 March on Washington to Stop the War on Iraq Before It Starts.

"The Bush Administration is currently using bribes and threatens to persuade other nations in the U.N. Security Council to support the invasion," said Dr. Jonathan Farley, Green Party congressional candidate from Tennessee. "But Green Parties and other antiwar activists in various nations are urging their governments not to support Bush's U.N. resolution. We also hope that the nonaligned Group of 77 in the U.N.'s General Assembly declare their opposition to George W. Bush's war for dominance over Middle Eastern oil."

On September 19, the Green Party of the United States issued a 'Statement in Opposition to U.S. Plans to Invade Iraq,' prepared by the party's International Committee, in which the party warned that an invasion of Iraq "would undo decades of progress in international conflict  resolution and make the world a more dangerous place for everyone.... Terrorist activity against U.S. citizens would increase. Islamic countries would be less likely to cooperate with the U.S. in anti-terrorism strategies."

In the statement, American Greens joined Greens throughout the world who have called for multilateral diplomatic strategies to resolve the crisis, beginning with a resumption of U.N. inspections of Iraqi weapon systems.

"After so many Democrats helped Republicans in Congress surrender the constitutional power to declare war to George W. Bush, the Green Party now stands as the party of peace and of adherence to international and U.S. constitutional law," said California Green gubernatorial candidate Peter Camejo.

Major demonstrations are planned for October 26 in at least 10 countries, including Mexico, Japan, Korea, India, Germany, and Spain.  Protests will also take place in other cities around the U.S. Camejo will speak at a protest in San Francisco that is expected to draw 30,000 to 50,000 people.

"This is the first time in history that the U.S. has officially asserted the right to launch a preemptive strike," said Charles Pillsbury, Green candidate for Congress in Connecticut's 3rd District. "Even Henry Kissinger admits that a preemptive strike would violate international law, although Kissinger believes that international law should be rewritten to grant the U.S. an exclusive right to preemptive military strikes. Preemptive strikes are now central to U.S. foreign policy."
