WISCONSIN -- At the close of 2006, Green Party member George Martin was given a "Lifetime
Peacemaker Award" by the Wisconsin Network for Peace and Justice, and was
honored on December 6th in the U.S. House of Representatives in a statement
read by Gwen Moore, Representative to Congress from the 4th Congressional
District.
Martin served as Co-chair of the Wisconsin Green Party from 2003-2005, is a
member of the International Committee of the Green Party of the United
States, and a founding member of the national party's Black Caucus. He was
also a former Co-chair of his local Green Party chapter, the Greater Milwaukee Green Party.
He is currently the Program Director for Peace Action Wisconsin, which
focuses on pacifist and activist resistance to violent actions in the United
States and in the world. He is also national Co-chair of United for Peace &
Justice, a coalition of more than 1,300 organizations opposed to the immoral
and disastrous Iraq War, and the U.S. government's policy of permanent
warfare and empire-building.
Martin is a life-long community activist, and a leader in the U.S. and
international peace movements. He is a powerful speaker against the War in
Iraq, and has reported on his fact-finding mission to Iraq in 2004 to groups
all over the country. He is also an excellent facilitator, and recently
facilitated a planning session of the Wisconsin Green Party.
"I have worked with George for several years and I am always impressed with
his hard work and dedication to peace and justice," said Ruth Weill, Co-chair of the Wisconsin Green Party.
The World Social Forum, to be held in Nairobi, Kenya from January 20th to
25th, will be attended by Martin. The World Social Forum brings activists,
social movements, networks, coalitions and other progressive forces from all
corners of the world together in democratic pursuit of social justice,
international solidarity, gender equality, peace, and defense of the environment. While there, Martin will address the Global Greens Youth
Conference, also in Nairobi from January 16th through 19th. The Global
Greens mission is to seek to deepen communications among Green Parties and
Green Federations throughout the world, and to stimulate and facilitate
action on matters of global consequence.
