Statement on Iraq
ASGP Delegates,
At the request of the Green Parties of Connecticut and Rhode Island,
and on hearing no objection from delegates as to its content, the
Steering Committee of the ASGP is endorsing the following statement as
written and approved by the Green Party of Rhode Island. It replaces
the earlier statement written by the GPCT, with the approval of the
GPCT. We heard from a couple of delegates that they would like to get
approval for this statement at an upcoming state meeting. In the mean
time, with US forces gathering in the Gulf, the Steering Committee
felt we needed to make a statement now. I will distribute this message
to other Greens, particularly Green Parties outside of the US.
Recipients of this message may distribute further as they see fit.
Again, we the SC looks forward to a discussion of the process for
approving these statements in Santa Fe.

Statement on a US Military Attack on Iraq from the Steering Committee
of the Association of State Green Parties
For humanitarian reasons, the Association of State Green Parties
unequivocally opposes the bombing of or any other military action
against Iraq during the present crisis. The people of Iraq, who have
already suffered terribly from the Gulf War and the subsequent
embargo, are the ones who would suffer from further death and
destruction, not Saddam Hussein. Since Saddam has already demonstrated
his callous indifference to the suffering of his own people, we see no
purpose to deadly military action. The ordinary people of Iraq are not
our enemy. The ASGP urges a peaceful solution to this complex problem
through serious international diplomacy.
Peace. Richard Walton, Green Party of Rhode Island.
