Contacts: Final results of Green involvement in
2000 elections and subsequent run-offs are posted at In the wake of the 2000 elections, eighty Greens in twenty-two states now hold elected office. California now has five Green mayors: * Kerry Arnett, Nevada City (Nevada
County) The city of Sebastopol now has a Green majority on its council, the second in U.S. history. Arcata, California was the first. The most dramatic victory occurred in San Francisco, where Matt Gonzalez won the District 5 seat on the Board of Supervisors (analogous to city councils in other cities) with a 65.4% majority in a December 12 run-off election. In 2000, Greens ran a record 275 races nationally, winning a record 33 seats. In 1999, the last odd-numbered year like 2001, Greens ran 95 races and won 11 seats. One of the twelve 2001 Green candidates, John Schmidt of Texas, who ran a write-in campaign for Upper San Marcos Watershed District Board of Directors, already won his January 20 election -- and then lost it in a recount. Mr. Schmidt's incumbent opponents succeeded in getting some of his votes disqualified because ten of the write-ins were misspelled. The Green Party of Texas intends to file a lawsuit. The other Green candidates in 2001 are: * Glenn Bailey for City Council in Los
Angeles, District 3, California MORE INFORMATION |
