PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Green Party of the United States held a press conference today at the steps of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia with Michael Morrill, the Green Party Gubernatorial candidate for Governor in Pennsylvania.

"Both major parties are beholden to corporate cash from huge Wall Street corporations who are now drowning in their own scandals," said Green Party Political Coordinator Dean Myerson. "It's hypocrisy for Democrats to claim the high moral ground on 'corporate responsibility. 'We have an Enron administration in the White House, and Enron Democrats and Enron Republicans in Congress."

The convention will occur over four days from July 18-21 at the Holiday Inn a few blocks from the historic sites of one of America's early capitols. The Green Party will also hold a large political rally on Friday night, July 19, at the Irvine Auditorium. Keynote speakers will include 2000 Presidential candidate Ralph Nader, 2000 California Senatorial candidate Medea Benjamin, Georgia Representative Cynthia McKinney, and numerous other prominent Green Party officeholders and candidates.

"Philadelphia is also a good place for our convention because the Green Party of Pennsylvania is one of our fastest growing and most dynamic state parties. 14 Greens were elected in Pennsylvania last year, demonstrating that Pennsylvania is ripe for the Greens' people's power," said Morrill.  The Green Party is running a strong nationwide slate of candidates in 2002 elections. 22 Greens have already won elections in spring municipal elections in 2002. Well over 300 Greens are seeking office this year, including 15 for governor (60% of all gubernatorial races), 6 for Senate and 42 for the House of Representatives.

"It'll be nice to have a convention that we don't have to organize a protest against," said Cheri Honkala of the Kensington Welfare Rights Union, who spoke at Thursday's press conference.

"It's time for a new movement for independence for the American people to dismantle the power of corporations over our national, state, and local governments and to restore democracy," add Myerson. "The Green Party is the fastest growing party of the people, and we are bringing our grassroots convention to the seat of American democracy this summer."
