Three great women whose lives are models for Greens and for all Americans: Ms.
Coretta Scott King, Rosa Parks, and Rose Bouziane Nader
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Members of the Green Party mourned the passing of Coretta Scott King earlier this week and paid tribute to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Ms. King.
"The Green Party owes its existence in part to the work of Dr. King, kept alive by Ms. King after his assassination," said Sundiata Tellem, co-chair the Black Caucus of the Green Party of the United States and the first African-American to chair the Dallas Green Party (Texas). "Nonviolence, on which Dr. King based his strategy throughout the civil rights movement of the 50s and 60s, is one of the Green Party's ten 'Key Values'. The Montgomery bus boycott, the drive to pass the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the Poor People's Campaign, and other efforts led by the Kings all stand as models for Green action."
Greens noted the loss of other prominent women in recent months, especially Rosa Parks (see the Green Party's tribute at <http://www.gp.org/press/pr_2005_10_26.shtml>), as well as Rose Bouziane Nader, Ralph Nader's mother.
Though not nearly as famous as Ms. King and Ms. Parks, Ms. Nader's values of civic responsibility were a lesson for her children and for all Americans. (Look for recipes by Ms. Nader placed on the Green Party's web site at <http://www.gp.org>.)
