Green candidates and activists to join Raging Grannies and CodePink at antiwar events in Washington, DC, July 3-4
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Green candidates and other party members will greet Raging Grannies
<http://www.grannypeacebrigade.org/>
when they arrive in Washington, DC, and participate in protest events against the war in Iraq in Washington, Monday and Tuesday, July 3-4.
Green candidates Michael Berg <http://www.bergforcongress.us>,
running for Delaware's seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, Kevin Zeese <http://www.kevinzeese.com>,
candidate for the Maryland seat in the U.S. Senate, and others join Cindy Sheehan, Dick Gregory, Daniel Ellsberg, and Col. Ann Wright at the events in Washington.
Michael Berg is the father of Nick Berg, American hostage murdered in Iraq in May, 2004. On June 29, Mr. Berg participated in anti-war activities with the Raging Grannies in Wilmington. Kevin Zeese is co-founder of VotersForPeace <http://www.votersforpeace.us>,
which promotes a pledge for voters to vote only for candidates who support a speedy end to the Iraq War.
The Green Party and its candidates have called for an end to the occupation and immediate return of troops, and have called for the impeachment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney for misleading the American people in their justifications for the war and other abuses of power.
The Raging Grannies' trek from New York to Washington, DC will culminate with their arrival in Washington on July 3, with a 3 p.m. opening ceremony at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in front of the Indian Embassy at Massachusetts Avenue and Q Street NW, followed by a march to the White House. A press conference will be held at 5 p.m. on Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House.
At midnight, a fast against the continued occupation of Iraq will begin. The 'Troops Home Fast,' organized by CodePink, will continue from July 4 until August 14. On July 4, the protest will take place all day in front of the White House. On August 14, the fast will move to Camp Casey in Crawford, Texas, where it will continue.
