California's Highest Court Asked to Put Green Party Congressional Candidate on November Ballot in S.F. |
Terry Baum for Congress NEWS CONFERENCE ADVISORY...Tuesday, 10 a.m. California's highest court asked to put Green Party congressional candidate on November S.F. ballot. SAN FRANCISCO -- A major news conference will be held Tuesday, at 10:00 a.m. at the San Francisco Green Party Office (1028 A Howard St.) to announce that the California Supreme Court has been asked to intervene in a San Francisco ballot controversy. Copies of the brief will be distributed, and members of the legal team present. The brief asks that the state's highest court to order the city of San Francisco to place the name of Terry Baum on the November ballot in the 8th District -- a seat currently held by Nancy Pelosi (D). Earlier this month, the Court of Appeal, 1st Appellate District upheld a decision without comment by a San Francisco Superior Court judge that has prevented Baum for being put on the ballot as the Green Party candidate. The campaign alleges in its California Supreme Court brief that SF elections chief John Arntz violated the law several times during last March's primary when he, among other errors, violated state privacy laws and then ignored the intent of the voters. Arntz refused to count hundreds of write-in votes -- although Baum's name was clearly written on the ballot -- and thus deprived Baum of enough votes to qualify for November's ballot, the campaign alleges. Baum is a lesbian playwright in San Francisco and a staunch anti-war and pro-civil rights activist.
