Green Party candidate for Congress Supports Army 'Disobedience' in Iraq; Blames Matsui for Failure to Back Troops. |
5th Congressional District California October 18, 2004 SACRAMENTO-Incumbent Rep. Robert Matsui (D) is to blame for the situation that led to the refusal of U.S. troops in Iraq to obey a direct order last week because they believed their equipment was unsafe, charged military veteran Pat Driscoll, a military veteran and Green Party candidate for Congress in the 5th CD (Sacramento). Driscoll, who is opposed to the war in Iraq and wants U.S. troops to be brought home immediately, said that, as a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War era, he wholeheartedly supports the troops, but that his opponent in the 5th district does not. "Rep. Matsui's vote against the $87 billion military appropriation for Iraq clearly shows his position against providing our troops the equipment they need to survive," said Driscoll. "It is clear that, once again, Rep. Matsui is asleep at the wheel." He noted that Matsui has "flip-flopped" on the war issue for several years, and failed to stand up and say it was wrong when he had the opportunity to do so. "He stood by while we sent our poorly-equipped youth and reservists to this war, and then failed to even vote for a bill that would have provided more armor and other materials needed to protect them," added Driscoll. Driscoll said it is the right of troops to disobey an order that is unlawful, and in the case of the South Carolina platoon in Iraq that refused to go on convoy because of unsafe equipment, he would support that decision.
