Matsui Criticized for Refusing to Disclose Issue Positions. |
5th Congressional District California October 29, 2004 Matsui criticized by nation's largest, non-partisan voter information service for refusing to disclose position on issues SACRAMENTO (October 29, 2004) - Rep. Robert Matsui is being heavily criticized by the nation's largest, non-partisan voter information service - created by, in part, two former Presidents - because he refuses to answer questions about his position on national issues for voters. Project Vote Smart - started in 1992 by 40 national leaders, including former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford - provides unbiased and accurate information about all candidates on its web page (http://www.vote-smart.org). Because Matsui has repeatedly refused to answer questions from PVS, news organizations and national political leaders, the project has placed a very rare "red alert" on its web page, vote-smart.org "REPRESENTATIVE ROBERT T. MATSUI REPEATEDLY REFUSED TO PROVIDE ANY RESPONSES TO CITIZENS ON ISSUES THROUGH THE 2004 NATIONAL POLITICAL AWARENESS TEST. REPRESENTATIVE ROBERT T. MATSUI REFUSED TO PROVIDE THIS INFORMATION WHEN ASKED TO DO SO BY: Major News Organizations; John McCain, Republican Senator; Geraldine Ferraro, Former Democratic Congresswoman; Michael Dukakis, Former Democratic Governor; Bill Frenzel, Former Republican Congressman." "This is just another example of how Mr. Matsui takes his re-election, and the voters of Sacramento County for granted. They have the right to know how he stands on the important issues," said Pat Driscoll, the Green Party candidate in the 5th District, who has completed the PVS questionnaire. "It is a simple matter to answer questions about your views, as a candidate. To not do so, provides no accountability to the voter." This is the second time this week Matsui has been questioned about his position on issues of the day. The Driscoll campaign this week disclosed two letters in which Matsui is claiming the U.S. needs to send "more troops" to Iraq "immediately." The congressman's campaign denied the claim, but the letters were produced Thursday to his office. 5th Congressional District California
