Karl Warkomski assumes top spot in GOP-dominated
Orange County
SACRAMENTO (January 7, 2005) - Karl Warkomski became
the first Green Party mayor in Republican-dominated Orange County this
week when he was elected by other city council members in the city of
Aliso Viejo.
Warkomski's election makes him the fourth current
Green mayor in California, joining Larry Barnett (Sonoma), Larry
Robinson (Sebastopol) and Lew Tremaine (Fairfax). All were also selected
by their colleagues.
There are now at least seven Greens serving as
mayors in U.S. cities. Joining the California mayors are Elaine Fleming
(Cass Lake, MN), Arthur R. Palumbo (Winder Borough, PA) and Jason West
(New Paltz, NY). All the non-California mayors were elected directly to
their post by voters.
There now have been 21 different Green Party mayors
in California, and a total of 29 across the U.S. since 1991 when Kelly
Weaverling was elected mayor of the fishing community Cordova, Alaska
shortly after the Exxon Valdez oil spill, according to Michael
Feinstein, administrator of national Green Party Election Website and
former mayor of Santa Monica.
In all, 66 Greens now hold public office in
California - including 12 on city councils or board of supervisors.
Greens hold the majority on city councils in Sebastopol and Arcata.
