U.S. Senate candidate Todd Chretien blasts incumbent Feinstein at funeral for Stan Tookie
Williams, calls execution 'state-sponsored murder'
LOS ANGELES - Incumbent California Senator Dianne Feinstein was a
"party...to state-sponsored murder" charged U.S. Senate candidate Todd
Chretien Tuesday while attending the funeral for Stan Tookie Williams, who
was executed Dec. 13.
Mr. Chretien, a state anti-war leader who last week announced plans to run
against Feinstein on the Green Party ticket, was an organizer in the campaign to demand clemency for Stan Tookie Williams. Mr. Chretien
attended the memorial in South Central Los Angeles.
"Everyone who fought stop Tookie's execution should remember in November of
next year that Sen. Feinstein was party by her silence to this state sponsored murder," said Mr. Chretien, 36, of Oakland.
"Millions of Californians passionately debated Tookie's fate. But Sen.
Dianne Feinstein remained silent. A new movement for civil rights and to
end the racist death penalty was born, but Sen. Feinstein couldn't even be
bothered to issue a press release," added Mr. Chretien.
The former Ralph Nader presidential campaign organizer and co-author of a
successful ballot measure to kick military recruiters out of the schools in
San Francisco also had harsh words for Gov. Schwarzenegger.
"Gov. Schwarzenegger proved himself a racist and a coward by executing Stan
Tookie Williams. Tens of thousands of Black, Latino and under-privileged
California youth watched on TV and listened on radio while the governor put
their mentor to death," said Mr. Chretien.
