Green Party of California fields strong Primary
slate, plans to add to the 59 members already in office; Three Greens bid for
US Senate nomination
SACRAMENTO -- The Green Party of California says it plans to
add to the 59 Greens already holding office by fielding a strong slate of
34 candidates - from races for governor and other state offices, to the
state Assembly and Senate, Congress and a bevy of local offices - in Tuesday's Primary Election.
Eight Greens are running for Constitutional offices, seven for the State
Assembly, two for the State Senate, seven for the House and three for one
US Senate seat. Another seven Greens are running for supervisor and city/neighborhood council
seats on June 6. Twelve other Greens are up for local seats in November.
And, Greens find themselves in several, high-profile head-to-head races in
June, battling for the right to move on to the November General Election.
The most hotly-contested primary for Greens is probably the US Senate race
where three Greens are running to see who will take on incumbent US Sen.
Dianne Feinstein.
San Francisco anti-war activist Todd Chretien, Santa Clara environmentalist
Tian Harter and former Green Party presidential aspirant Kent Mesplay of
San Diego are all vying for that US Senate nomination. In the lower house,
civil rights attorney and former Pasadena mayor, Bill Paparian, heads a
group of seven Greens running for House seats.
Greens are also fielding candidates in all statewide constitutional races.
At the head of the ticket is Peter Camejo, who has run twice before for
governor. Laura Wells is making her second run for Controller, as is Donna
Warren for Lt. Governor.
In the Assembly (44th District, Los Angeles), Philip Koebel and Ricardo
Costa are in a race to see who moves on to November. Two Greens are running
for State Senate spots.
And, in local races, Aimee Allison is among the favorites in a Oakland City
Council election, while six Greens are in city council and supervisor races
throughout the state.
