Green Party of Colorado |
To the Sierra Club, Rocky Mountain Chapter Executive Committee. |
CONTACT: ------------------------------------------------------------- The theme of my campaign is “Principle Before Politics.” In this instance, for me that means advocating for the environment in spite of any political costs ... because it is the right thing to do. It is a concept sorely needed in this nation during these anxious times. It is my contention that unhealthy cynicism is bred when, in practice, the words are reversed. To be perceived as having put political calculation before conviction will ultimately erode the integrity of any organization. In other words, in this particular case, there should be less concern over the viability of candidates and political parties, and more dedication to the viability of this planet Earth on which we all must live. I will stand on that principle. Consequently, Club members and the public are going to want questions answered. Does the Sierra Club first advocate for the environment, or for the Democratic Party? Does the Sierra Club stand with the candidate whose “environmental credentials are impeccable,” or with a “viable” candidate who, in recent years, has opposed numerous positions of the Club, and who publicly campaigned against the Club’s growth-control initiative two years ago? Finally, the Sierra Club should be proud of the positions that the Rachel Carson Group executive committee has taken. The Rachel Carson Group assisted Congressman Udall in the creation of the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge; the group has shown great virtue in its resolute determination to stop a sprawl-inducing beltway from being built in north Jefferson County; the group’s work on behalf of Amendment 24; the extra effort on the part of new volunteer excom members to build stronger environmental awareness in the north suburbs. And, I am gratified that excom members of the Rachel Carson Group felt I was best suited to carry the Club’s banner of environmental advocacy to Washington. I have and will proudly exercise my first Amendment right to free speech to proclaim this environmental support. Sincerely, Dave Chandler |
