Connecticut Greens to Push for Impeachment if Governor Rowland Does Not Resign. |
Connecticut Green Party December 27, 2003 HARTFORD, CT -- The Impeachment of Connecticut Governor John Rowland, if he does not resign, seems the only option to officials of the Green Party of Connecticut, and his problems are only part of the corruption problem in the state, in a statement released today. Citing numerous scandals and almost daily revaluations, Green Party leaders said Rowland does not seem likely to resign, despite calls from groups like Common Cause, and 5 newspapers like The New York Times and the Hartford Courant. Tom Sevigny, State Co-Chair, said " Yes, Rowland should resign, but that alone will not solve the problem. Rowland is merely a symptom of a disease that has contaminated both of the major political parties and put our democratic government on life support. The disease is big money. The elimination of John Rowland from the governor's mansion will still leave intact the legalized corruption that has turned our statehouse into the private preserve of special interests. Politicians will continue to accept corporate money, lobbyist will continue to have special access, conflict of interest will continue to be ignored, and the public's trust in the democratic foundations of our law-making institutions will continue to erode." Sevigny added " We need to see the disgrace of John Rowland as an opportunity to drastically reform campaign finance, lobbying and ethics laws. To do any less is to merely treat the symptom and ignore the disease." Green Party officials announced that they will begin to contact their local State Representatives and Senators asking for impeachment hearings to begin, if Rowland does not resign. ------------------- Green Part of Connecticut: www.ctgreens.org
