WASHINGTON, D.C. - The D.C. Statehood Green Party has endorsed Mai Abdul Rahman for the District II
(Wards 3 and 4) seat on the D.C. Board of Education.
Ms. Abdul Rahman, a member of the party, was endorsed unanimously by the Statehood Green Party
at its February monthly general assembly, Thursday, February 1, 2007. The special election
for the School Board seat will take place on May 1, 2007.
"The fundamental right to free educational opportunities is a basic value for all students,"
said Ms. Abdul Rahman, a parent, former D.C. Public School teacher, and former PTA Board
member. "All children in the District of Columbia have a right to high-quality public
education. It's time to implement that right!"
"DC Schools need a strong voice who really means 'Leave No Child Behind' and who will help assure
quality education to all our children through a comprehensive educational program," said
Alejandro Miranda, education advocate and a Ward 4 organizer and resident. "Mai's first priority
is to advocate for our D.C. children. She has been busy at it for more than 10
years."
Mai Abdul Rahman produced and hosted 'Spotlight on
education,' a cable television educational program in which she advocated
educational reform in D.C. and promoted successful school initiatives. She has
participated in the Ready Schools Project, which provides support for high quality teaching in the
D.C. Public School system.
Ms. Abdul Rahman helped establish Universal Breakfast for all D.C. children, and participated
in D.C. Hunger Solutions, a project to fight hunger and improve the health, nutrition, and
well-being of local children and families.
"I support Mai because I know her as a fellow parent in D.C.P.S.," says Philip Blair, father of
three D.C. Public School students and a member of the D.C. Statehood Green Party. "She has always
put her formidable energy to work for her children and mine, and parents need one of our
own on the Board of Education."
Along with the rest of the D.C. Statehood Green Party, Ms. Abdul Rahman has strongly criticized
Mayor Adrian Fenty's proposal to transfer responsibilities and functions from the School
Board over to D.C. Council, as well as the Mayor's plan to go over the heads of D.C. voters
and ask Congress to impose the amendment to the D.C. Charter that would effect the

The D.C. Statehood Green Party is also supporting Renee Bowser <http://www.reneebowser.com>
in the May 1 special election to fill the Ward 4 seat on D.C. Council, which was vacated by Mr. Fenty when
he was elected Mayor.
