THE D.C. STATEHOOD GREEN PARTY Monday, April 19, 2004 Contact: CAMPAIGN PARTY FOR ARTURO GRIFFITHS, STATEHOOD GREEN CANDIDATE FOR D.C. COUNCIL AT-LARGE, AT LATIN JAZZ ALLEY, APRIL 22 WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The campaign to elect Arturo Griffiths to D.C. Council will hold a party and fundraiser at Latin Jazz Alley on Thursday, April 22. Latin Jazz Alley is located at 1721 Columbia Road, NW in Washington, D.C., in the Adam Morgan neighborhood. The event will take place 7:30 to 10:00 p.m. Arturo Griffiths is running for the at-large seat on D.C. Council in the 2004 election on the D.C. Statehood Green Party ticket. Mr. Griffiths ran unsuccessfully for an at-large Council seat in 2000. He plans a formal announcement of his 2004 candidacy shortly. Mr. Griffiths, a veteran community activist and labor organizer, was born in Panama and immigrated to Washington, D.C. in 1964. He has been a longtime activist in youth organizations, and helped found the Latin American Youth Center. He was elected President of the Latin American Festival for three years. Mr. Griffiths planned and coordinated the Citywide Multicultural Leadership Summit in 1992. He also worked to build a citywide grassroots health care advocacy organization called Health Care Now and fought to preserve the public hospital at DC General. More recently, Mr. Griffiths has been working as a union organizer for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). He is also organizing with the Coalition for Housing Justice, to stop evictions in Columbia Heights and throughout the city, and to ensure increased access to affordable housing. MORE INFORMATION |
