DC Statehood Green Party
Steve Donkin Announces Bid for D.C. Mayor on Green Party Ticket.

Will be First Challenger to "Unchallenged" Incumbent Anthony Williams
May 1st News Conference at Wilson Building to Outline Platform

WASHINGTON, DC -- Vowing to "fight for the residents of D.C. relentlessly and without compromise," D.C. Statehood Green Party activist Steve Donkin will announce his intention to run for Mayor of the District at a news conference on Wednesday, May 1, at 12 NOON in front of the John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, which houses the Mayor's office.

Donkin is the first announced challenger to incumbent Mayor Anthony Williams.

Williams has maintained a monopoly on the pursuit of the District's highest elected office, despite numerous policy and budgetary actions that have angered constituents and a recent Inspector General's report detailing numerous legal and ethical improprieties <http://www.dcwatch.com/govern/ig020328.htm>.

WHO: Steve Donkin, Candidate for Mayor of the District of Columbia, seeking nomination of the D.C. Statehood Green Party

WHAT: Kick-off press conference

WHEN: Wednesday, May 1, at 12:00 NOON (please note new time)

WHERE: Front of John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Ave., NW.

"I'm excited about finally bringing to the people a campaign that they can claim as their own," said Donkin. "We'll be taking the campaign directly to the communities, particularly those that have been neglected, abused, and squeezed dry by the current administration's policies of giving away public resources to private special interests."

The press conference will include a "Revolt Against Bowtie Tyranny," a symbolic protest of the bowtie-wearing incumbent's "crimes" against D.C. residents (ATTN. PHOTO ASSIGNMENT).

Among the many initiatives that Donkin will promote throughout his campaign are:

  • full funding of public education, UDC, and the social service safety net;

  • tax relief for middle- and low-income working people and repeal of the Tax Parity Act;

  • restoring D.C. General Hospital and providing quality public health care for all D.C. residents;

  • public funding for human needs, NOT for stadiums and Olympics;

  • passing a local living wage law and local reparations legislation;

  • stopping the asthma epidemic in D.C. kids by improving compliance with clean air rules;

  • restoring basic constituent services in ALL wards;

  • stepping up the movement for FULL citizenship rights and D.C. Statehood.
