Arturo Griffiths to Announce D.C. Council (At-large) Candidacy, May 18. |
Committee to Elect Arturo Griffiths Tuesday, May 11, 2004 Renie Bowser, Griffiths Campaign Manager Arturo Griffiths, 202-452-5560 WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Arturo Griffiths will formally announce his campaign for the at-large seat on D.C. City Council on Tuesday, May 18, in an 11 a.m. press conference on the steps of the Wilson Building (D.C. City Hall), 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. Mr. Griffiths is running to secure the D.C. Statehood Green Party's candidacy in the September primary, after which he will compete in the November 2 general election. He ran for an at-large Council seat in 2000, gaining praise from WTOP political commentator Mark Plotkin, the Washington City Paper's Loose Lips, and ormer Council member Hilda Mason. Arturo Griffiths' 2004 campaign theme is 'D.C. For Everyone!' Griffiths will fight to use taxpayer money for public projects that benefit the entire community and against private perks for a few. "I strongly oppose a taxpayer-funded ballpark," said Mr. Griffiths. "If baseball is such a money maker, wealthy team owners should be willing to put up their own money instead of asking for taxpayer subsidies. The citizens of San Francisco said no to a public subsidized stadium and forced the Giants to build the stadium with 95% private money. In D.C., we need to use that $250-400 million to overhaul the city's infrastructure, starting with the corroded water system and our crumbling school buildings." "'D.C. For Everyone' means full funding for the Housing Production Trust Fund at $40 million to provide and maintain affordable homes for all residents rather than a ballpark home plate for the amusement of a few," he added. "It means fighting to restore a full-service public hospital, to provide quality health care for all D.C. residents." "The problem with D.C. government is that the few have been allowed to benefit over the entire community. This failure can be traced to closed door politics which result in back room deals. I say let the sunshine in on our government so it can work for and be accountable to all District residents." Mr. Griffiths is a popular community leader in Northwest Washington, D.C., where he is known as the unofficial 'Mayor of Mt. Pleasant.' An Afro-Latino from Panama, Mr. Griffiths has a history of advocacy on behalf of immigrants in D.C., especially young people. He currently works as a union organizer for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). For more about Arturo Griffiths, visit <http://votearturo2004.org/about.html>. MORE INFORMATION |
