Asa Gordon will speak on electoral reform at the International Festival for Peace and Civil Liberties on June 9.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Asa Gordon, who chairs the D.C. Statehood Green Party's Electoral College Task Force, will deliver a keynote address, "The Constitutional Mandate for Electoral Reform", during a gathering of antiglobalization activists in connection with protests against the 2004 G8 Summit on Georgia's Sea Island.

Mr. Gordon will speak at the International Festival for Peace and Civil Liberties, which will take place June 8 to 10 in Savannah's Forsyth Park.  His speech is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 9.

Asa Gordon, who is also executive director of the Douglass Institute of Government, has led the legal effort to enforce the 14th Amendment's equal protection guarantees, especially through the democratization of the Electoral College.

The principle sponsor of the festival is the Savannah-based Labor and Action Research Project, Inc. whose mission is "to materially support the staging of cultural and educational events, to distribute multi-media information, and to forge human networks, which enable the broad masses of Southern Peoples to establish social justice, racial integration, sustainable economic development and popular democracy."

The festival, which has been endorsed by the D.C. Statehood Green Party, will feature local, national and international speakers, music, theater, a global information exchange, and more.  The event will highlight the erosion of global and local democracy, which has led to escalating international conflict, economic exploitation, ecological devastation, and attacks on human rights and civil liberties.

Since December 2003, the Labor and Action Research Project has battled local and federal officials seeking to obstruct public opposition on the Georgia Coast to the G8 Summit and its policies.  With the support of the Georgia Civil Liberties Union and hundreds of activists, intellectuals, and progressive enterprise owners across the South, the Project has prevailed, and the voices of local residents and activists from across the globe will be heard in Savannah during the G8 Summit.
