  • Ray Browne and Susana Baraņano's Petitions Lack Valid Signatures

  • Both Democratic Candidates Should be Removed from the Sept. Primary Ballot

WASHINGTON, DC - After thoroughly reviewing the signatures on the nominating petitions for Ray Browne and Susana Baraņano, the two Democratic candidates for the U.S. Representative for DC position, volunteers with the Adam Eidinger for U.S. Representative Campaign discovered multiple flaws-enough to remove both candidates from the Democratic Party's September 14 primary election. The 'Adam 4 Shadow' campaign filed official documentation today with the DC Board of Elections and Ethics challenging thousands of signatures and alleging serious violations of DC election law.

Members of the media who would like to view the official challenges and/or the petitions can contact Zoe Mitchell at 202-253-2990.

"Browne and Baraņano have less than the requisite 2000 valid signatures needed to appear on the primary ballot," Adam Eidinger, the DC Statehood Green Party candidate said.  "Many of the signatures the two Democrats submitted are from individuals who are not registered to vote in the District of Columbia or have moved since they registered to vote. Other signatures are illegible, incomplete or worse, forged."

While these facts alone should disqualify Browne and Baranano, both candidates also signed affidavits declaring that all the signatures were from people who reside in the District of Columbia. Upon review of each individual signature, the Adam 4 Shadow campaign discovered that many of the petitions include individuals with Maryland or Virginia addresses.

"In a one-party dominated city someone has to hold the Democrats accountable; we are doing that with these challenges," Zoe Mitchell, Senior Political Advisor to the Adam 4 Shadow campaign, said.  "Democratic candidates cannot assume that they are entitled to hold political office. They must find real voters that are registered in DC to support their candidacy."

About Adam: Adam endorses the DC Statehood Green Party platform and advocates full voting representation in the U.S House and Senate, local power over all branches of DC government & budget, eliminating federal oversight of DC's local budget, giving all DC residents the right to vote in local elections, and ensuring that local ballot initiatives are implemented. Adam ran for U.S. Representative in 2002, coming in second to Browne with over 15,000 votes.

About the 'Shadow' Representative Position: Since DC has no vote in Congress - no Senators, and only a non-voting Delegate to the U.S. House - we have a "Shadow" statehood delegation that will step in as our representatives in Congress when DC becomes a state. Until then, the "Shadow" Representative serves as an advocate for democracy in DC. The position is unpaid.
