WASHINGTON, D.C. - Steve Donkin, D.C. Statehood Green Party candidate for Mayor, was awarded the highest rating of all mayoral candidates today by the Gay and Lesbian Activist Alliance (GLAA). Donkin received 7.5 out of a possible 10 points, beating out incumbent Democrat Mayor Anthony A. Williams, who received a 3.5 rating.

The other mayoral candidates, all Democrats, were awarded ratings as follows: James W. Clark, 0; Faith, 0; Osie L. Thorpe, 0; and Douglas E. Moore, -3. GLAA bases its rating system on the candidate's yes/no responses to the organization's questionnaire, the candidate's substantive grasp of issues based on the answers provided on the questionnaire, the candidate's record of achievement on gay and lesbian issues, and the candidate's championship in taking the lead on an issue of concern to gay men and lesbians.

Of all the other primary election candidates rated by GLAA, the only ones who received ratings equal to or higher than Donkin were the following incumbents: Jim Graham, openly gay Ward 1 Council Democrat (7.5); Phil Mendelson, At-Large Council Democrat (7.5); Kathy Patterson, Ward 3 Council Democrat (9); Sharon Ambrose, Ward 6 Council Democrat (10); and David A. Catania, openly gay At-Large Council Republican (10).

GLAA is the nation's oldest continuously active gay and lesbian civil rights organization, with members throughout the metro D.C. region and elsewhere. The organization is non-partisan and does not endorse candidates.
