DC Statehood Greens Congratulate 2004 Candidates, Celebrates Six Victories. |
D.C. Statehood Green Party Monday, November 8, 2004 Contact: THE D.C. STATEHOOD GREEN PARTY CONGRATULATES ITS 2004 CANDIDATES, CELEBRATES SIX ANC VICTORIES WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The D.C. Statehood Green Party thanked and congratulated the party's 2004 candidates for public office, and noted that six Statehood Greens were elected to nonpartisan Advisory Neighborhood Commissions. "Our candidates ran aggressive, positive campaigns, meeting thousands of voters, raising issues important to D.C. voters," said T.E. Smith, a Statehood Green Party activist. "They hammered away on accountability over lead-tainted D.C. drinking water, on the need for a restored full-service public hospital, on the waste of taxpayers' money for a proposed ballpark, and on the goal of statehood and democracy for the people of D.C. They did so without accepting any of the corporate money that has compromised Democrat and Republican politicians. We are immensely proud of them, and grateful too." The number of voters registered in the D.C. Statehood Green Party has climbed steadily during the past year, and now stands at 5,215. Maine is the only state where the Green Party has a higher percentage registrants than the District of Columbia. The ANC seats exemplify the commitment of the Statehood Greens and the Green Party nationally to grassroots organizing and civic empowerment. "Being an ANC commissioner is a great opportunity to promote community involvement and to help empower D.C. citizens which is key to making city leaders put their constituents first, not real-estate developers or stadium owners," said Alex Hogan, who won his race for ANC 1A03. "It also reiterates to me that the best way for Greens and other progressives to start taking their country back is to start local." 2004 D.C.
