Former Black Panthers Leader Elaine Brown to Speak at Green Event in D.C., April 23. |

Statehood Green Party Friday, April 15, 2005 Contact: FORMER BLACK PANTHERS LEADER ELAINE BROWN TO SPEAK AT GREEN EVENT IN D.C., APRIL 23 Ms. Brown and San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi to appear at the Green Party's Chesapeake Campaign School at Howard University and UDC, April 23-24. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Elaine Brown, activist, author, lecturer, candidate for Mayor of Brunswick, Georgia, and the only woman to lead the Black Panther Party, will be featured guest speaker during the Green Party's 'Chesapeake Campaign School' planned for Saturday and Sunday, April 23-24 in Washington, D.C. The Chesapeake Campaign School will take place at the University of the District of Columbia and Howard University and is sponsored by the Green Party Coordinated Campaign Committee and the D.C. Statehood-Green Party. Ms. Brown will speak Saturday evening, April 23, 8:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. at Howard University's Blackburn Center in the Digital Auditorium. Her topic will be "From Revolution to the Ballot Box: A Discussion of Strategy for Radical Change." Ms. Brown's speech is sponsored by the Green Institute, an independent tax-exempt organization, and is open to the public; students are especially encouraged to attend. The Chesapeake Campaign School is the most recent in a series of Green Party regional training schools around the U.S. for Green candidates and campaign organizers. Other recent Green Party Campaign Schools have included the Prairie Campaign School in the Midwest and Pacific Campaign School on the west coast. Organizers of the Chesapeake Campaign School expect participants from D.C., Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and possibly other states. Also featured at the Chesapeake Campaign School will be Ross Mirkarimi, member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Mr. Mirkarimi served as campaign manager for Matt Gonzalez, former president of the Board of Supervisors, when Mr. Gonzalez ran for Mayor of San Francisco in a 2003 run-off election. Despite a late entry into the race, Mr. Gonzalez received 47% of vote, include a majority of votes cast on Election Day. Emi Ireland and Phil Nash, authors of Winning Campaigns Online: Strategies for Candidates and Caucuses, will also speak. Short bio of Elaine Brown: Elaine Brown became, in 1974, the first and only woman to lead the Black Panther Party. In her autobiographical memoir, "A Taste of Power: A Black Woman's Story," she recounts her life from the ghettos of North Philadelphia to her leadership in one of the country's most important and militant civil rights groups. Ms. Brown's most recent book "The Condemnation of Little B" examines racism in the U.S. through the case of a 14 year-old African American boy condemned to life in prison.
