WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Juneteenth Celebration and
D.C. Music Festival, set for June 19, 2005 in Washington, D.C., will
commemorate the 140th anniversary of the day, June 19, 1865, when Union
troops reached Galveston, Texas to establish the Emancipation
Proclamation as law in the last state of Confederate rebellion -- 2½
years after the date of the Emancipation Proclamation (January 1, 1863).
"Juneteenth Celebration organizers will bring
members of the community together at the African American Civil War
Memorial to celebrate and reflect on this historical event, and to draw
connections between emancipation and current movements in the
majority-black District of Columbia for D.C. statehood and voting
representation in Congress," said Head-Roc, musical artist and
organizer of the event.
The afternoon of music, DJs, speakers, remembrance,
and fellowship will be hosted by Jared Ball of Blackademics on WPFW. The
event is being organized by the African American Civil War Museum, D.C.
