14 Statehood Green candidates plan to run for office in the November election -- more than ever
before
WASHINGTON, DC -- 14 DC Statehood Green candidates -- more than ever before -- plan to
have their names on District of Columbia ballots on Election Day, November 7. The number of 2006
candidates breaks the previous record of 12 candidates in 2004.
Statehood Green candidates for partisan office filed papers at the D.C. Board of Elections and
Ethics on Wednesday, July 5.
Two mayoral candidates and two candidates for the Ward 5 City Council seat will compete for the
party's nomination in the September 12 primary election. A list of all candidates is appended
below.
Among major campaign themes that Statehood Green candidates intend to address are democratic
governance of D.C.'s public school system; adequate funding for school repairs and for
equipment and textbooks; the need to preserve rent control; opposition to the use of taxpayers'
money for the new baseball stadium; public health care; and the longtime
demand for statehood -- democratic self-determination for the people of
D.C.
"The recent votes by City Council to build a ballpark with taxpayers' money and to weaken
tenant protections for the benefit of landlords reveal how deeply big business money has
compromised D.C.'s ruling Democrats," said Statehood Green Party activist Jenefer
Ellingston. "D.C. desperately needs a two-party system, with an alternative that doesn't serve
the interes s of baseball billionaires or AOBA [Apartment & Office Building Association of
Metropolitan Washington, the landlords' lobby]. It's time to elect Statehood Greens!"
