Newark, Delaware: State delegates to the Green Party of the United States
(USGP) recently endorsed legislation to establish a national Peace Tax Fund. The proposed legislation would amend the Internal Revenue Code to provide that taxpayers conscientiously opposed to any participation in war could have their income, estate, and gift tax payments spent for non-military purposes by establishing a special ³peace tax² fund.
³It is worth noting that the Peace Tax Fund does not exempt taxpayers from paying their full share of federal income tax², said Trish Norton, registered Green and member of Wilmington Friends Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. ³Instead, it is designed to help citizens opposed to war on deeply held religious or ethical teachings from supporting war with their tax dollars.²
By endorsing the Peace Tax Fund, the Green Party of the United States joins thousands of individuals, religious groups, as well as several organizations including the American Friends Service Committee, the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, the Fellowship of Reconciliation, Sojourners, Veterans for Peace and Women¹s International League for Peace and Freedom. Several individuals are presently testing in court their right to prevent their tax dollars from supporting war efforts.
Initially founded in 1971 to address the basic issue of conscientious objection to war as it involves the payment of taxes, The Peace Tax Fund Bill (H.R.1186) was sponsored by Rep. John Lewis 3/22/01. Currently the bill is in the House Committee on Ways and Means. Both Green Party of Delaware delegates to USGP voted in favor of Peace Tax Fund endorsement.
