Green candidate Michael Berg urges supporters to demonstrate against the Iraq war on March 18, 19 and 20, launches new national Peace organization
DELAWARE -- On the third anniversary of the US
invasion of Iraq Michael Berg, Delaware Green candidate for U.S.
Representative, urged opponents of the war to demand immediate withdrawal of US troops and to oppose establishment of permanent military bases in Iraq.
"The thousands of Americans, including Greens, who protested in the streets in early 2003 were right," said Berg <http://www.bergforcongress.us>,
who was thrust into the role of prominent spokesperson for the peace movement when his son Nick was abducted and killed on May 7, 2004 in retaliation for the torture of Iraquis in Abu Ghraib prison.
"We need to hold public officials who got us into the Iraq war accountable. Being right doesn't make us proud, it makes us angry and sorrowful for the needless deaths of tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians, the more than 2,300 U.S. service members, and the hundreds of civilian contractors."
Berg will participate in protests in Fayetteville, North Carolina, near Ft. Bragg, and also in Washington D.C. He stated: "I will miss taking part in the vigils I usually participate in, and I want to ask that you stand for me and others who cannot be there. In order for these vigils to be effective we must swell the sidewalks and pour into the streets."
On his way to speak at Ft. Bragg, Michael Berg will stop in Washington, DC to speak at a press conference on Friday, March 17 announcing the formation of Voters for Peace, <http://releases.usnewswire.com/GetRelease.asp?id=62368>
a non-partisan group that is seeking to obtain pledges from five millions voters not to support pro-war candidates in the 2006 and 2008 elections.
In Delaware opponents of the war will gather on Saturday March 18, from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM on Rt 202, Concord Square shopping center (near Borders and
SuperG).
