Georgia Greens Congratulate First Ballot Qualified Partisan Candidates

Georgia Green Party leadership is extending its congratulations to its first ever ballot qualified Green candidates in partisan races on their impressive showings in yesterday's elections.  Zack Lyde (with the absentee ballots still out) took 488 votes or 30.2% of the vote cast in the two-way Glynn County 5th District School Board race.  Ed Vaughan turned in 276 votes or 8.35% in his three-way 7th District Clarke County Commission race.

"These local races give Georgians the chance to see how we as Greens are ready to govern," said Nan Garrett, 2002 Green Party nominee for Governor of Georgia. "And our state-wide campaign has introduced us to hundreds and hundreds of new Party activists across the state.  It is those newly identified Greens who will organize the new county affiliates and campus greens and field the local candidates on which this Party's future will be built. These are the activists who will turn Georgia around and put us on a sustainable path."

Early numbers in the Party's write-in campaigns suggest that both Clarke and Dekalb Counties each delivered more write-in votes for each member of the Green Party state-wide slate than any of the party's candidates took state-wide in 1998.  And Harry Lyde in his bid for State House District #146 topped Kerrie Dickson's numbers from her 2000 state house race by 25%.
