The Georgia Green Party, in an overwhelming
consensus vote, officially endorsed Elaine Brown in her run for mayor
of the City of Brunswick during their annual convention Sept. 17.
Although the race is non-partisan, Brown, who
became an official member of the Green Party earlier this year, faces
strong opposition from Republican-backed candidate Bryan Thompson. If
elected, she will become the first female and the first black to hold
the position.
In addition to his conservative political
leanings, Thompson is also President/CEO of Blueprint Brunswick, a
private company created to institute a wide-spread plan to
"revitalize" the Brunswick area.
Blueprint Brunswick has received over $150
thousand in funding from the city during the past three years. In
addition to presenting a glaring ethical conflict to Thompson's
attempt to run for mayor, part of his company's plan targets residents
for displacement in 135 blocks of an area of the city which is
predominantly black and economically challenged.
Newly-elected Georgia Green Party co-chair Nan
Garrett stated, "Elaine Brown's campaign for Mayor of Brunswick,
Georgia, is the most exciting local campaign that we have had with the
Georgia Green Party in my entire 10 years' involvement. Brunswick
residents could not find a better example of a woman with both the
heart and brains necessary to lead their city."
In addressing the Georgia Green Party at the
convention, Brown said, "It would be an honor to receive your
endorsement. What is happening to the poor people in Brunswick is an
absolute atrocity and we can no longer afford to sit by and watch them
be taken advantage of by a government that exists solely for its own
self interests. I believe the Green Party stands for the same ideals
which I have stood on for over 40 years now and I hope you all will
help me as we attempt to bring government back to the people, starting
in Brunswick, Georgia."
The Georgia Green Party strongly encourages Greens
and progressives from throughout the state to actively involve
themselves in Elaine's campaign. This is a crucial time for Georgia
and the entire nation and a victory for Elaine Brown on Nov. 8 could
prove to be the catalyst for a brighter future.
