IOWA GREENS APPLAUD VILSACK MATRIX DECISION

Waterloo, Iowa -- The Iowa Green Party believes Gov. Tom Vilsack was correct in his decision to keep the state out of the MATRIX database, as was recently reported by the Associated Press.

MATRIX (Multistate Anti-Terrorism Information Exchange) is currently in use in five states, and compiles data on non-charged citizens.

Iowa Greens share the general concern over privacy protection raised by MATRIX. We expressed those concerns in a February press release, and we called on the Governor to take exactly the action he now has.

"Iowa Greens value citizens' traditional and constitutional privacy rights," said Media Coordinator David Larson. "We see the Patriot Act and its threat to citizens' freedoms, and we resent that some in government would exploit legitimate fears over terrorism to take precious rights and liberties away from us. MATRIX is dead in Iowa, and that's a very good thing."
