IOWA GREEN PARTY ANNOUNCES APRIL WATERLOO CONVENTION

Iowa City - The Iowa Green Party will hold its annual state convention on April 10. This year's event is set for Waterloo and will convene at the city's library.

This year's main address will be delivered by U.S. Senate candidate Daryl Northrop, of Des Moines. He is seeking the position currently held by Republican Charles Grassley.

Daryl says, "The aim of my campaign is twofold: Build the Green Party at the grassroots level here in Iowa, and give voice to a previously unheard special interest group - Iowans."

Also on the convention's agenda will be consideration of platform planks and state and local candidacies. Attendees will discuss this year's presidential contest, including various Green nomination aspirants and independent Ralph Nader. Reports are to be given by the IAGP's Financial, Platform, and Media representatives.

And of course, delegates to the Greens' upcoming Milwaukee National Convention will be selected.

"The fact that we are having a National Convention of the Green Party this June shows how much we Greens have grown into a viable political party," says Wendy Barth, an Iowa Green Party co-chair. "It is exciting that Iowa will be represented at that convention."

"This will be a challenging year for the Green Party," adds Iowa Green Party Secretary Holly Hart. "But we expect to gain through those challenges."

Iowa Greens continue to receive attention from voters attracted by the Greens' opposition to the war in Iraq and the Patriot Act. Others, disheartened by mounting unemployment numbers, see in the Greens a clean break from the failed policies of 'politics as usual.'

The event will be open to the press. Inquiries and interview requests are encouraged.
