Iowa City - The Iowa Green Party demands that State Senator Dell Hanson, who admits to recent illegal dumping, make a public apology.

According to a 3/31 KWWL TV report, Hanson last weekend, "allegedly tossed an old bathtub and construction debris at the city's compost dump." Police note that compost dump is clearly marked for yard waste only. Hanson is not disputing the charge, and has offered to pay the consequential $5000 fine.

The ironic element: Vinton Republican Dell Hanson is a member of the Iowa House Environmental Protection Commission.

"Who's going to protect us from the 'protectors,'" asks Scott County Green Ted Pfeiff.  "Sure, this may seem like minor story but its got major implications. As an elected official, Hanson is supposed to observe an ethical standard above reproach. And as an Environmental Commission member, he should be especially sensitive to issues like unlawful dumping. Instead, he seems cavalier about all this. Like it's OK for an elected official to break laws, as long as he can pay a fine. What's to stop him from doing this sort of thing again? We want to hear him apologize."

The Iowa Green Party feels $5000 is a pretty cheap price for arrogant, willful disregard of environmental laws - and nowhere near the cost of an earth unspoiled.
