Iowa Candidate for US Senate Daryl Northrop Affirms Right-to-Choose. |
Northrop for Senate October 7, 2004 As Sarah Weddington, the attorney who successfully argued the landmark Supreme Court case of Roe v. Wade in 1973, prepares to speak at Iowa State University tonight, DARYL NORTHROP, the Green Party's candidate for United States Senate from Iowa, affirms his pro-choice stance for Iowa voters. "Women have a fundamental privacy interest in their own health," said Mr. Northrop. "They also have a right to choose whether to procreate. I know that women do not make this decision lightly, nor do their doctors, and I believe that it is in those hands the ultimate decision should rest." Both incumbent Charles Grassley and Democratic candidate Art Small favor significant restrictions on these rights. Both men support prohibitions on the dilation and extraction procedure, as well as public funding of abortion, which unfairly hurts those without medical insurance or who cannot otherwise afford a private physician. Mr. Northrop opposes these positions. Decisions about abortion procedure should be left to the skilled medical knowledge and discretion of doctors and the patients they serve. And because the Supreme Court has declared that women have a fundamental right to control their own bodies, all women, regardless of income or status, have a uniform right to choose and obtain such medical services.
