IOWA GREEN PARTY CANDIDATES MAKE GAINS IN TUESDAY ELECTIONS

Members of the Iowa Green Party running in Tuesday's elections made important gains and demonstrated the growing party's serious electoral character.

In Emmettsburg, Tim Harthan was elected to a second city council term. In 2002, Harthan was the Iowa Green Party's candidate for the U.S. Senate seat held by Democrat Tom Harkin. His Tuesday election was a  victory for Green Party politics in Iowa.

As was another Green win that day. Eric Kinsman won re-election to  a second term on the Windsor Heights City Council. Kinsman won with clear numerical majority support: 56.8%. Like Harthan's, Kinsman's strong showing bodes well for future Iowa Green electoral efforts, at both the municipal and state levels.

And that Harthan and Kinsman won re-election shows that Iowa voters appreciate Green representation!

Already in elected office here in Iowa is Green Party member Kevin Lee, who serves as a Decorah Township Trustee.

Even Greens who failed to win election Tuesday received impressive voter support. Steve Wieland and Matt Denner sought election to the Mt. Vernon and Ames City Councils, respectively. Wieland drew about 240  votes and Denner got some 166.

"We made important gains on Tuesday," said Iowa Green Party Media Coordinator David Larson. "We're proud of all of our candidates. The Iowa Green Party is growing. We're building a statewide network of activists to support the 2004 Green Party Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates, as well as state and national congressional Green candidates. Just watch us in 2004."
