Dorothy Lafortune will Mount Campaign for Vacant District 18 Seat

The Biddeford Green Independent Committee held a caucus on Tuesday evening and nominated local celebrity Dorothy Lafortune to be the Green Independent candidate in the February 3rd special election for House District 18.

"Dot Lafortune received 43% of the vote when she ran for a Biddeford City Council seat this past November with very little funding. She is obviously an extremely viable candidate deserving of the party's nomination," said Alan Brown the Chairman of the Biddeford Green Independent Committee.

Lafortune is a long time resident of Biddeford and is not a newcomer when it comes to politics. In addition to running for City Council in the recent election she was also a candidate for State Senate in 2002.

"The cost of housing in this state has gone out of sight. Every day people are losing their apartments and homes because they live on  fixed incomes and rent and property taxes keep going up, up, up. Somebody has to be a voice for these people and I feel I am the best person in this race who can do that," said Dorothy Lafortune.

A special election was set by Governor Baldacci last week for House District 18. The seat was recently vacated when State Representative Marie Laverriere-Boucher resigned. The winner of the February 3rd election will represent District 18 through the end of this year.
