MAINE GREEN INDEPENDENT PARTY Co-Chairs: For Immediate Release: March 14, 2004 Maine Green Independent Party on Same Sex Marriage The Maine Green Independent Party (MGIP) calls on Governor Baldacci and the Maine Legislature to immediately repeal the statutory definition of marriage as being between a man and a woman, and to publicly affirm their support of the constitutional guarantee of equal protection for all citizens under the law. MGIP fully supports equal rights for all citizens to enter into civil contracts with each other, including civil marriage, regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual preference, or other social status. The ability of same sex partners who are of legal age, to join their economic lives by contracting in civil marriage is not a religious issue, but an issue of whether all citizens have equal access to protection under the law. The Maine Green Independent Party stands opposed to those who would deny their fellow citizens the protection of equal rights, and urges Maine's political leaders to stand in strong defense of the rights of all citizens.
