Four members of the Maine Green Independent Party attended the U.S. Green Party's annual national convention at the storied Mayflower Hotel in Washington D.C. this past weekend, July 18-20.

Representative John Eder of Portland and Tom Fusco of Brunswick accompanied two delegates from the Maine Green Independent Party, John Rensenbrink of Topsham and Morgan D'Arc of Portland. 110 delegates from 43 member states participated in event, which was titled "Green Party at the Crossroads".

"In the last four years we have gained Federal Election Commission status and the number of member states has doubled to forty-three. This is a testament to the fact that we are the fastest growing political party in the country. It is a very exciting time to be a Green and it was inspiring to share it with party members who are here from across the country and around the world", said Tom Fusco.

John Eder was among the elected officials who attended as honored guests of the convention. "This is a great chance for me to connect and share valuable information with other Green elected officials from around the country like New Jersey State assemblyman, Matt Ahearn, who switched his affiliation from Democrat to Green this legislative session." said Eder.

Among the business dealt with at the convention was the election of co-chairs and the approval of a budget proposal by the Black Caucus of the U.S. Greens to hire a national outreach co-coordinator to build  relationships with African American communities across the country on behalf of the Party.

Among the highlights of the weekend were discussions of preparations and strategy for the 2004 presidential elections. Those who formally announced their intention to seek the party's nomination for President in 2004 held a press event. Among those seeking the nomination was David Cobb a former legal advisor to the Party and a founder of the Texas Green Party.

"David Cobb impressed me in his stated intent to form a strong partnership between his campaign and the Party to develop a unified strategy for the 2004 presidential elections. This is a significant change in the way candidates and the Party have related in the past." said John Rensenbrink, one of the founding members of the U.S. Green Party and Maine Green Party.

Letters were read in absentia on behalf of Georgia Congresswomen Cynthia McKinney and Ralph Nader. Neither would confirm nor deny rumors of their intention to seek the party's nomination for president in 2004. Unlike Cobb neither Nader nor McKinney are members of the Green Party.
