Maureen D. Taylor, described as the most radical
and activist candidate for the Detroit City Council in the recent
primary election, has filed suit on August 19, 2005, against the
Detroit City Clerk, Jackie Currie; the Detroit Elections Commission;
and a phantom candidate, “Marino Taylor”, for stealing the
election from her, demanding a recount and demanding that the
practices of the Detroit City Clerk and Election Commission be
reformed. The suit seeks the preservation of all records related to
the Detroit August 2, 2005 primary, not just the ballots needed for
the recount that Maureen Taylor (The Grassroots Candidate) requested
on August 16, 2005. The case has been assigned to Wayne County 3rd
Circuit Court Judge John H. Gillis, Jr.
Using identity theft, “Marino Taylor” (a
person who had no campaign office, no telephone, attended no
candidates' nights, declared bankruptcy in the middle of the campaign
and distributed a ridiculous piece of campaign literature suggesting
that contributions be sent to the Fifth/Third Bank) was originally
listed as having received 8,715 votes in partial returns posted on
August 3, 2005, the day after the election. Maureen D. Taylor, who
ultimately was given 9,436 votes, wrote a letter on August 4, 2005 to
the Elec- tions Commission demanding an investigation and that the
votes attributed to “Marino Taylor” be transferred to her.
Mysteriously, after that letter, the votes attributed to the identity
theft candidate, Marino Taylor, dropped to 2,289 in the final tally.
If Maureen D. Taylor had received those votes and the votes originally
attributed to the phantom candidate, she would have had a total of
approximately 18,000 votes, enough for her to have finished 15th in
the Council race (the spot presently occupied by Thomas Stallworth,
who has been challenged as living in Southfield).
The stealth candidate, “Marino Taylor”, does
not appear to live in the house listed on her petitions for candidacy
or her petition for bankruptcy (19626 Hamburg). She has refused to
respond to written and oral requests for interviews made to her at
home, through her church, through her attorney or at her work. In
short, since she became a candidate, no one has seen her.
The citizens of Detroit, the Detroit Elections
Commission, and the press should be interested in the question: “Who
is Marino Taylor and how did she get in this election?”
The second challenge Maureen D. Taylor (the
Grassroots Candidate) makes is to longstanding practices by the Clerk
and the Election Commission which she claims are illegal, wasteful,
expensive, and an open invitation to fraud. The City claims that there
are 637,870 registered voters in the City of Detroit, a figure which
is obviously inflated in comparison to Detroit’s total population
and the number of persons under eighteen (18) or otherwise unqualified
to vote in the City. Despite repeated protests, the Elections
Commission routinely sends out 150,000 applications for absentee
ballots, 60,000 of which were returned as undeliver- able in the
run-up to the August 2, 2005 primary election (approximately 40%).
Projecting that percentage across all of the allegedly eligible
registered voters in Detroit would mean that the actual number of
qualified voters would be approximately 380,000.
Political consulting firms sell lists of potential
absentee voters in Detroit containing approximately 30,000 names.
Approximately 40,000 people voted absentee in the August 2, 2005
primary. Again, the citizens, the City, and the press should want to
know what happened to all those delivered, but unreturned, absentee
voter applications and where did the extra 10,000 absentee votes come
from?
