GREEN PARTY TO RETAIN PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY

For more information:

Lydia Clark, state cochair: 501-1828
Rick Lass, Green Council member: 920-0540

At the state meeting of the Green Party of New Mexico on Saturday, June 14, the Green Council passed by consensus a resolution to maintain use of a primary election to determine Green voters' preference for the Party nominee for US President. The idea of using a caucus was overwhelmingly rejected due to its costliness, confusion, and the likelihood that far fewer voters would participate.

"Why go to the trouble and expense of introducing a whole new electoral cycle in early February, when New Mexico voters' are accustomed to voting in June?" asks Lydia Clark, state  cochair. "In fact, voters will have to go vote again in June to select local candidates. This makes no sense, financially or otherwise."

"The costs to administer and educate people about this Presidential selection process will be astronomical," said Rick Lass, a Green Council member representing the Santa Fe local. "For the same people to argue that including the Greens in Primaries is too expensive, then to administer an entire new election mini-season is the height of arrogance."

The Green Party of New Mexico continues to work to increase participation in the political process. In addition to retaining primary elections, the Greens support Instant Runoff Voting, Proportional Representation, Publicly Funded Campaigns, and other important election law changes. The Green Council also endorsed two measures to pursue requiring the county clerks to list "None of the Above" on all offices on the Green Party Primary ballot.

The Green Council is the governing body of the Green Party of New Mexico consisting of representatives  from active locals around the state. The Council meets bimonthly between conventions. The next Green Council meeting is August 9 in Pilar.
