Las Vegas, Nevada - Today 60 members of the United States Senate put political expediency ahead of science and the wishes of the people of Nevada and voted to effectively override our state's veto of the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste depository. This action will have profound consequences nationwide as nuclear waste will be shipped through virtually every part of the country to be stored there.

It goes without saying that simply moving these materials exponentially increases the chances of an accident involving radioactive waste not only in Nevada, but in many other states as well. Even if the waste does arrive in Nevada without incident, there is no guarantee a mishap at the site won't catastrophically alter the very nature of southern Nevada forever. If President Bush and members of Congress are so intent on fighting terrorism, why then do they support a plan that gives terrorists a golden opportunity to strike with every shipment?

This cannot stand. I support any and all attempts by the state and its citizens to block further action on Yucca Mountain.
