LAS VEGAS - Citizens Against Yucca Mountain, a Las Vegas-based nonpartisan group which opposes the recently-approved nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain 100 miles from Las Vegas, last week endorsed Green Party congressional candidate Lane Startin over major party candidates who also oppose the project.

"The endorsements were based on the candidates' written responses," Startin said. "I'm thrilled and honored."

In his reponse, Startin wrote that as a member of Congress he would use his office as a "bully pulpit" to encourage the state to continue fighting the dump. "If necessary I will call on the governor to close the state to shipments," Startin wrote. "In Congress, I will support environment-friendly energy legislation in the hopes of eventually eliminating the demand for nuclear power altogether."

Startin is the only third-party congressional candidate endorsed by the group. Democrat Dario Herrera and Republican Bob Daily received dual endorsements in the newly-created Nevada 3rd District. Second District Republican incumbent Jim Gibbons also received an endorsement.

Startin, 29, will face Democratic incumbent Shelley Berkley, Steven Dempsey of the Independent American Party, and the winner of the Sept. 3 Republican primary between Las Vegas city council member Lynette Boggs McDonald and bus driver Alfred Ordunez in the Nov. 5 general election.
