NEW YORK, NY - Green Party candidates for statewide office submitted
approximately 30,000 signatures to the New York State Board of Elections
this morning in Albany.
"Hundreds of volunteers have put in thousands of hours petitioning so that
anti-war, social and economic justice-seeking, ecologically wise and truly
democratic values are represented on this year's ballot," said Alison Duncan, Green Party
candidate for Lieutenant Governor. "Malachy McCourt and I have pledged that if the people would get us on the ballot, we
will get the votes we need to restore the Green Party's rightful ballot access."
Duncan's mother, Dr. Maire Duncan, stood in for her today in Albany.
The candidates submitted double the required number of signatures on an
independent nominating petition. Although the party does not currently have
ballot status, the Board of Elections is required to record Green enrollment
in New York as a result of a court decision in a lawsuit filed by the Green
Party of New York State. The party now has over 36,000 members.
"The petition signatures indicate a level of interest that will support our
participation in upcoming debates," added Duncan. "Many petitioners were
particularly enthusiastic about the opportunity for Green Party candidates
to contribute the antiwar sentiments shared by many New Yorkers to the
electoral debate."
