Duncan Encourages Girls to Consider a Future in
Politics
BROOKLYN, NY -- Alison Duncan, LGBT activist, union worker, and Green Party
candidate for Lieutenant Governor of New York, spoke today at the First
Annual NYC Festival for Gender Equity held at Von Dyke Park in Brooklyn. The
festival featured workshops for children and their parents on a wide range
of topics including leadership, self esteem, media literacy, HIV/AIDS education, communication and teen domestic violence. Duncan asked girls at
the event to consider a future in politics.
"There are many rewards to running for office," said Duncan. "For me, one of
them is being a connection point for the many different communities I belong
to. In addition to being the Green Party candidate for Lt. Governor this
year, I am also a political activist, a lesbian, a theater artist, a premed
student and a union hotel worker."
Duncan encouraged girls at the festival to consider running for office
because "the responsibility for public laws, infrastructure, resources and
investments should be shared by as many people as possible." She asked them
to "think of politics not as a career but as a public service" and suggested
that "anyone who becomes a leader in their community should seek a term in
office." Duncan advised that girls start out by volunteering for organizations that interest them.
"It is especially important for each of us to run for office because of the
significant under representation of women in government, especially women of
color," Duncan added. "In New York state, elected officials and political
appointees have had the power to outlaw some forms of discrimination, to
deny voting rights to people convicted of felonies, to close hospitals, to
prosecute corporate criminals, to decide what children learn in school and
to spend billions of dollars. These powers should not be concentrated in a
few career politicians."
