The Green Party of Ohio Response to Ralph Nader's Announcement of an Independent Run for U.S. President in 2004. |
Green Party of Ohio February 23, 2004 The Green Party of Ohio wants to stress that Ralph Nader's current presidential campaign is not endorsed by or connected to the Green Party of Ohio in any way. "The Green Party of Ohio is committed to supporting the party's candidate whomever that might be." According to Anita Rios, Ohio Coordinating Committee member, and former co-chair on the Green Party of the United States. The party conducted its own on line caucus and poll in January, 2004 of Green Party members who chose David Cobb, a longtime Green activist, as the preferred Green Party presidential candidate. Mr. Nader chose not to run, but received enough write in votes to get to earn 2 of Ohio's 23 delegates. The possibility remains that Nader could obtain enough support among the delegates to the Green Party Presidential Nominating convention, in Milwaukee Wisconsin, June 2004, to become the Green Party candidate. "Many Greens feel there needs to be at least 1 candidate running in the 2004 general presidential election who supports Universal Healthcare, opposes NAFTA and WTO, opposes the National Missile Defense System" according to David Berenson Ohio Coordinating member. Berenson went on to say," The candidate needs to addresses real democracy issues such as Instant Runoff Voting, the outdated Electoral College system, Inclusive Debates between all viable candidates rather than just the 2 wealthy, corporate-supported parties." The Green Party of Ohio is dedicated to the growth of the party and to providing the citizens of Ohio with real choices in selecting their political leaders. For that reason, we have run candidates in every election cycle since 1996 and are currently running three local candidates running for state representative: Chris Glassburn (Cleveland/Lorain), Logan Martinez(Dayton) and Rick Otten, (Columbus) areas.
