Pacific Green Party Supports Universal Health Care Day. |
Pacific Green Party of Oregon February 22, 2004. Joanne Cvar, PGP Co-Chair, 541-563-3615, cvar@oregonvos.net The Pacific Green Party of Oregon has endorsed the National Health Care Action Day planned for March 4 in communities all across the nation. The day is being organized by Jobs with Justice to fuel a growing movement for a comprehensive national health insurance plan. Activists will highlight the outrage workers feel about paying more for their health benefits while cuts in funding and managed care mean they get less health care in return. "The recent Congressional vote to adopt a Medicare privatization and prescription drug program was a setback for senior citizens and all working people," according to Liz Trojan, PGP Co-Chair and JWJ member. "One in ten children in Oregon do not have health care, and union members everywhere are fighting for health care benefits for their families." On March 4, hundreds of thousands of workers and community activists across the country will wear stickers, hold rallies, and demonstrate to protest Bush's Medicare sellout and promote health care for all. An emergency health care clinic is planned for the 4th at noon in Portland's Pioneer Courthouse Square. Doctors and nurses will diagnose our health care emergency and suggest treatment for a system in crisis. Workers are urged to wear Health Care stickers to work on that day to demonstrate their solidarity with the movement. Call Margaret Butler, 503-236-5573, or e-mail Margaret@jwjpdx.org for more information about events and rallies in the Portland area. In Eugene, a rally for health care will take place in the Safeway parking lot. The rally will feature workplace stickering for the various unions involved, including Justice for Janitors-Service Employees International Union, Communications Workers of America, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, AFSCME, IAM, and teachers' unions. For times and information, call 541-736-9041 or email essn@efn.org. "Numerous studies have demonstrated that universal health care can provide quality care for everyone at a lower cost than we are paying now," says Joanne Cvar, PGP Media Coordinator. "We need a more humane system. Now is the time to focus our concerns on building a broad-based movement to ensure adequate health care coverage for everyone."
