Pennsylvania Green Party
Rendell Campaign Misleads Pro-Choice Voters.

PHILADELPHIA - Kate Michelman, president of the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL), was inaccurate when she stated at a Feb. 21 press conference with Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ed Rendell that Rendell "is the only candidate for Governor in Pennsylvania with a record of protecting a woman's right to choose" and that "Without Ed Rendell on the ballot, pro-choice voters will have no voice in November."

Michael Morrill, the Green Party nominee for governor, is the former executive director of Pennsylvania's Campaign for Choice (now affiliated with Pennsylvania NARAL) and a consistent supporter of reproductive rights. Morrill will not participate in the primary election and will be on the general election ballot alongside the Republican and Democratic nominees pending the circulation of nomination papers among registered voters.

"I will work tirelessly to protect a woman's right to make her own reproductive choices," Morrill said, "and I am the only candidate with the vision to call for a repeal of the most restrictive abortion laws in the nation." Rendell said Thursday that he would not work to change Pennsylvania's parental notification laws.

Michelman went as far as to suggest that abortion-rights supporters who are not Democrats should change their registration so they can vote for Rendell in the primary. "That's the wrong way to look at membership in a political party," said Anne Goeke, a member of the Green Party's national committee and 2000 candidate for state auditor general. "Pro-choice voters should join the Green Party, the only consistently pro-choice party in Pennsylvania."

Morrill is also the only candidate calling for single-payer universal healthcare, which would give all women access to both prenatal care and abortion.

"In the middle of all this excitement about the primary, let's not forget that the real election is in November," Morrill spokesperson Eric Prindle said. "The voters always have a choice, and this year, their best choice is Michael Morrill."
