HARRISBURG, PA - Michael Morrill, the Green Party nominee for governor of Pennsylvania, will hold a news conference announcing his opposition to the Schweiker plan to drill for oil and gas on Pennsylvania state forest lands.

Drilling will also be allowed under state parks, wild areas, and natural areas. Gov. Schweiker plans to open 499,858 acres of state forest and state park lands to oil and gas drilling via a public auction in Harrisburg on May 8 and 9. The plan has been decried by environmentalists for its potential harm to the environment and also for the secrecy involved in developing the plan.

Morrill will blast the Schweiker drilling plan, and will also criticize the silence of the other gubernatorial candidates. "Earth Day is over, so the environment is no longer a campaign issue for Rendell, Casey and Fisher," said Morrill. "Pennsylvania's environment deserves more than one day of attention from our next governor."

Calling the Schweiker plan, "Pennsylvania's ANWR," Morrill says the plan can have devastating consequences for our environment and tourism industry.

Morrill will be joined by Rachel Martin of the Allegheny Defense Project, Annie Goeke (Green Party of the United States) and Ben Price (Congressional Candidate, 19th District).
