HARRISBURG -- Green Party gubernatorial candidate
Michael Morrill reacted to Ed Rendell's victory in the Democratic
primary tonight, reminding voters that he is the only candidate who will
stand up for working people and other ordinary Pennsylvanians.
"On issue after issue, voters who want progressive policies will
vote for the Green Party, while those who support the failed policies of
the past might as well flip a coin," Morrill said at a Green
"victory party" at the Crowne Plaza hotel.
-
Both Rendell and Fisher support maintaining the
current minimum wage, which keeps working families in poverty.
Morrill is the only candidate calling for a transition to a full
living wage.
-
Neither Rendell nor Fisher will work for
universal health coverage in Pennsylvania. Morrill, when elected,
will immediately start meeting with other regional governors to
develop an effective plan for universal healthcare.
-
Both Rendell and Fisher are hostile to labor
unions. Morrill has worked as a labor organizer and strongly
supports workers' rights.
-
Both Rendell and Fisher support the death penalty
and would sign death warrants. Morrill would impose a moratorium
during his term of office and would work legislatively to abolish
the death penalty.
-
Neither Rendell nor Fisher has demonstrated a
commitment to reversing the over-representation of racial minorities
in Pennsylvania's prisons. Morrill will make this issue a priority
in his administration.
-
Even on one of Rendell's signature issues --
education -- neither he nor Fisher will call for the General
Assembly to meet the Pennsylvania Constitution's mandate that it
fund the Commonwealth's schools. Morrill would work to institute a
graduated income tax and a wealth tax to ensure fair statewide
funding of schools without putting the tax burden on working
families.
-
On another issue Rendell has highlighted --
reproductive choice -- neither he nor Fisher will work to repeal the
nation's most restrictive abortion laws. Morrill calls for the
repeal of the Abortion Control Act.
"Green candidates are the only ones standing up
for ordinary Pennsylvanians, especially working people, women, and
minorities," Vicki Smedley, Morrill's lieutenant gubernatorial
running-mate, said.
The Green Party will announce its full slate of state
legislative candidates and unveil its statewide legislative agenda after
the candidacy filing deadline closes in August.
