READING,PA -- Michael Morrill praised today's 6-3 Supreme Court ruling that bans the execution of people deemed mentally retarded.

"I am thrilled that the Supreme Court has recognized the barbarity of executing people who are retarded," said Morrill. "I look forward to the day when they rule that all executions are cruel and unusual. Until that day, we must rely on our elected officials to bring us into the plethora of nations that refuses to sanction state-sponsored killing. I reiterate my position that when elected I will never sign a death warrant. I further promise to work tirelessly to make the death penalty a relic of the past and a shameful memory of a less civilized point in our history."

Morrill is the only candidate for governor opposed to the death penalty.
